Enrolment in higher-level mathematics in senior secondary school has been declining in Australia for several decades and continues to be at an all-time low (Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, 2024). Although many studies have looked at factors that might be influencing this enrolment downtrend (Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation, 2017), only a few studies have sought the perspectives of students regarding their choice of enrolment in senior secondary mathematics (Hine et al., 2023). In this short communication, we report on the development of a scale to examine students’ motivations to enrolment in certain senior secondary mathematics courses and the pilot of this scale in Western Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria.
