Abstract
School-based placements play a central role in preservice teachers’ professional preparation and identity formation. Drawing on self-determination theory, a qualitative longitudinal study with 98 participants identified four placement features that supported secondary mathematics preservice teachers’ flourishing identities through the development of autonomy, competence, and relatedness. These features are conceptualised as design principles for effective secondary mathematics placements that support flourishing, highlighting how placement environments can be intentionally designed to support preservice secondary mathematics teachers’ development.
