Abstract
This paper presents some results of a pilot study which devised a 20-item paper-and-pencil, short answer/
multiple-choice questionnaire to assess students' understanding of statistics and
probability in Grades 3,6 and 9. The items are presented, with discussion of response differences
over the three grades, and the level and type of cognitive functioning associated with responses.
