Abstract
Over 1995 and 1996, the researchers conducted a study of the factors which
influence Australian students' selection or non-selection of mathematics
subjects at the upper school level. Some 6 000 students from Western
Australia, Queensland and Victoria responded to a survey seeking to determine
such factors. This paper describes the outcomes of the survey and suggests
that students' cognitive style orientations have a significant role to play in the
subject selection process.
