Abstract
Ten primary School Mathematics Leaders responded to a survey asking them to give advice at the beginning of the 2026 school year to teachers who were about to take on the responsibilities of leading the teaching and learning of mathematics. Leaders emphasised the importance of a clear purpose, building professional knowledge and fostering research informed pedagogy. They highlighted the value of professional learning communities grounded in trust, collaboration and resilience. The findings offer practical guidance for aspiring mathematics leaders and highlight the personal qualities essential for effective leadership.
