Abstract
In this paper I describe the status of affect as an educational outcome and argue for more
meaningful integration of affective and cognitive aspects of mathematics learning and
mathematics education research. I provide examples from projects with which I have
been involved of directions that could be pursued towards this goal and present systems
thinking as a perspective that offers considerable explanatory value and can foreground
the whole of cognition and affect as more than its constituent parts allowing a more
realistic approach to and view of the likely impacts of interventions.
