Abstract
Much is claimed about the efficacy and efficiency of Explicit Teaching in schools. Recommendations for pedagogy emphasising explicit instruction have been widely adopted by education systems across Australia, commonly citing evidence from the Australian Education Research Organisation. But what does Explicit Teaching say about ontological and epistemological questions such as learning, knowledge and how knowledge is developed? This paper uses an imagined dialogue between Critical Realism and Explicit Teaching to seek to articulate the philosophical underpinnings of Explicit Teaching in mathematics.
