Abstract
Reports of mathematics leadership in MERGA conference research papers have relied on exploratory methodologies, leaving a gap in interventionist approaches. We argue for Developmental Work Research, within the cultural-historical activity theory tradition, as a methodology for examining mathematics leadership during a time of educational change. We outline how DWR can support mathematics leaders and researchers in collaboratively surfacing, examining, and addressing leadership practice problems. We illustrate this through our current project with several mathematics leaders who are experiencing practice problems stemming from policy change.
