Abstract
This paper examines the use of Key Word Sign (KWS) as an inclusive strategy for early mathematical learning. Reporting on phase three of a multi-stage project, it explores how staff and children enacted KWS in an early learning centre. Two main approaches were identified in how children and staff used KWS in mathematics: 1) intentional and deliberate, and 2) spontaneous and responsive. These approaches were used during structured activities and play, enhancing access to mathematical language, strengthening spatial reasoning and promoting multimodal communication. Findings position KWS as a valuable strategy for inclusive embodied mathematics pedagogy.
