In February 2025, MERGA published the Position Statement on Effective Mathematics Teaching, affirming that effective mathematics teaching requires multiple pedagogical strategies, used in response to student needs, local contexts, and learning goals. This Round Table will engage in critical dialogue about the future research directions emerging from this position statement and the development of a position paper.
This round table invites the MERGA community, including but not exclusive to the regular SWG members, to contribute to the scholarly conversation following the release of MERGA’s Position Statement. We aim to generate a robust research agenda that advances understanding of effective mathematics pedagogies and informs evidence-based practice across the educational landscape.
In lieu of the MERGA Special Working Group monthly meeting, this interactive session will facilitate scholarly exchange through three key activities: Position statement implications, Further research considerations & Position paper development.
By engaging the collective expertise of the MERGA community in this round table, we aim to strengthen the impact of the Position Statement and contribute to a more nuanced understanding of effective mathematics teaching that moves beyond dichotomous debates toward evidence-informed, contextually responsive pedagogical approaches.
