This is a forum to provide participants with an overview of select issues related to the business of getting one’s own work published and others’ well reviewed.
There is little doubt that writing with the intention of publishing is one of the core practices in our field. As a result, concerted attention is devoted to supporting HDR students’ and early career researchers’ writing, as well as to establishing peer-based writing support structures. At MERGA46 last year, we launched a round table focused on early (and not-so-early) career advice on writing and publishing as an additional means of supporting academic writing within the MERGA community; This year’s round table is organised by Vince Geiger, the Editor-in-Chief of Mathematics Education Research Journal, in collaboration with the MERGA Vice Presidents for Publication (Jana Visnovska) and Development (Kristen Tripet).
In 2024, we focused on reviewing and learning to write adequate reviews as an intentional path to becoming a better writer. This year we will focus on some of the processes that are a part of the publication journey. We will attend to understanding journal quality (e.g., Nivens & Otten, 2017; Williams & Leatham, 2017), including its counterpart—which journals to be weary of, and how to tell the difference. We note that the timeline to publication as well as the style of the journal review process differ across journals, and discuss how insights on these characteristics may matter in identifying the right journal for a specific manuscript.
Drawing on the experiences of (and as) journal editors we will talk about when a submission is most likely to be successful (e.g., Simon, 2004), overview the most frequent mistakes emerging authors make, and share advise on how to avoid or work through some of these. In addition, we will touch on extending MERGA Proceedings publications for submission to stronger outlets, and on support available to authors for whom English is a non-dominant language (Geiger et al., 2022). We will invite emerging researchers who have recently succeeded in getting published in some of the high-quality journals to share their experiences and advice. Participants will be invited to share their questions and suggestions related to writing to publish with the aim of building the strength of our community.
