Abstract
This paper examines the nature of mathematical understanding and explores how
Problem Posing-Based Learning (P-PBL) can foster it using a framework proposed by
Cai et al. (2026) that conceptualizes mathematical understanding through five
interconnected aspects: factual, procedural, conceptual, metacognitive, and affective. It
also presents five lenses for examining and fostering understanding: mathematical,
cognitive, social, diagnostic, and instructional. Future directions for research are
proposed, including the use of the proposed framework to synthesize existing studies
using AI and further investigate how P-PBL can support mathematical understanding.
