Abstract
This instrumental case study examines how a Queensland mother developed agency in supporting her Year 1 child’s mathematics learning at home during COVID-19 school closures (2020 – 2021). Findings suggest one possible trajectory from constrained agency, through emerging agency shaped by relational recognition of what others could contribute (Edwards, 2010), to enacted pedagogical judgement that the relational process made possible. This trajectory indicates that parental agency in mathematics education is not acquired through knowledge alone but developed through relational conditions, with implications for how schools design support for families.
