Abstract
This review explores research on integrating Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into mathematics education. Significant findings indicate that mathematics education can enhance ESD competencies. However, challenges persist, including limited teacher preparation, curriculum constraints, and tensions between mathematical rigour and sustainability contexts. The review emphasises four key instructional methods: problem-based learning on sustainability issues, mathematical modelling for real-world sustainability problems, STEM education, and Place-Based Education (PBE).
