Abstract
This paper focuses on better understanding children's early space and
measurement knowledge. Five Year 1 students from each of two schools and
five Kindergarteners from one of those schools, were given an initial and final
assessment in arithmetic, space and measurement. Students' advancements in
arithmetic and space were not accompanied by advancements in measurement.
Arithmetically more able students were found to be more able on space and
measurement tasks and there was great variation in students' space and
measurement knowledge.
