There is a lot of rich mathematical cognition and learning research occurring in Australia and New Zealand. The aim of this roundtable is to bring this research together in an effort to develop community and formal infrastructure to raise the impact of this work. The roundtable will explore current mathematical cognition and learning themes in Australia and New Zealand, develop a network to identify where there might be critical masses of researchers, and consider how can we support this research and collaboration both nationally and internationally. In particular, we are interested in supporting complimentary and overlapping areas of research that can drive synergy and joint initiatives between MERGA and the Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (MCLS).
MCLS’s mission is to “advance the interdisciplinary scientific investigation of mathematical cognition and learning across countries, cultures, and communities, to disseminate the resultant knowledge, and to promote its application globally for improving the learning of mathematics and enriching its development” (https://www.the-mcls.org/). This roundtable may interest researchers working in a wide range of areas, such as embodiment, representation, visualisation, fractions, patterning, working memory, math anxiety, math learning difficulties, and assessment. This session invites participation from any researcher interested in any areas related to mathematical cognition.
