Abstract
The Harristown State High School project investigated the effect of more time via voluntary
after-school, core mathematics tutorials on Year 8 student learning outcomes. Six factors
(additional time, assessment structure, colour booklets, supportive learning environment,
rewarded competitions and qualified tutors) were identified from a pilot study as critical and
were chosen to be central to the study. Pleasing outcomes included strong parental support,
the number of student volunteers (115), and improved confidence and test results.
