Abstract
Number sense is generally regarded as an important aspect of general mathematiCs knowledge,
while mental computation performance is frequently thought to link to number sense ability.
With current national numeracy testing, placing an emphasis on number sense, this study
explores the relationship between number sense, mental computation and general mathematics
performance of primary students. Results indicate that performance in these three areas was
often disparate, and raise some interesting questions about number sense and mental computation and assessment of mathematics curriculum.
