Abstract
The introduction of pedagogic strategies to support student talk in mathematics classrooms has had varying success. This study explored the pedagogic identity of two teachers within a professional development project aimed at developing student talk in early years mathematics. Interview data with the two teachers were analysed deductively according to Lefstein’s four dimensions of dialogic teaching and related to pedagogic identity. Findings revealed contrasting ideologies that influenced the teachers’ adoption of talk strategies and suggest that, to sustain changes in student talk, teacher pedagogic identities should be recognised and accommodated.
