Lisa O’KeeffeThe 1999 TIMSS video study highlighted a heavy reliance on the mathematics textbook in Australian classrooms (Hiebert et al., 2003). This promoted further investigation by Vincent & Stacey (2008) who have documented the differences between mathematical textbooks and concerns with regard to problem solving. However, there is much anecdotal evidence to suggest that the role of the textbook may be changing and that the emergence of digital technologies may in fact replace the mathematics textbook (Hu, 2011). Hence, this exploratory study intends to a brief insight into the current status of the mathematics textbook and its use within Australian classrooms.
