Wini Emery and Leeana HerewiniMaori medium education in New Zealand has been in existence for more than 20 years. Te Poutama Tau (TPT), similar to the mainstream Numeracy Project, is responsive to the Ministry of Education?s strategy for improving levels of literacy and numeracy in New Zealand schools. The major difference between the Numeracy Project and TPT is that TPT is situated within the context of Mӓori development, including the maintenance and revitalisation of the Mӓori language. Since 2002, there have been four evaluation reports tracking the progress in Te Poutama Tau. The reports have been used to show trends in student achievement, and the teaching of mathematics via Te Reo Mӓori.
