MERGA Position Statement

MERGA Position Statement on Effective Mathematics Teaching

MERGA affirms that effective mathematics teaching requires multiple pedagogical strategies that respond to student needs, local contexts and learning goals. No single teaching approach can develop all of the knowledge, practices and dispositions needed for deep understanding of mathematics with purpose.

Any recommendations about effective teaching in mathematics must draw appropriately on high quality research in mathematics education from a range of perspectives that responds to:

  • contemporary research in how people learn mathematics and advances in teaching practices
  • changes in workforce, societal needs and technological innovation, and
  • a commitment to social justice.

For teaching and learning to prepare young people for the future, these elements must all be at the forefront of effective mathematics teaching.
