A Study of the Relationship between Conceptions of Mathematics and NAPLAN Numeracy Test Results
Sven Trenholm, Mohan Chinnappan, Bronwyn Hajek, Helen Ashman,& Amie AlbrechtArguably, the NAPLAN Numeracy test is regarded as an effective instrument in gauging students’ ability to integrate multiple pieces of information during the course of solving real-life problems (Lawson & Chinnappan, 2016). In this study, students were administered the conceptions of mathematics questionnaire (Crawford, Gordon, Nicholas & Prosser, 1998) alongside the grade 9 non-calculator NAPLAN numeracy test. We report on the results of two correlational analysis (n=61 and n=68) for students taking two different introductory level undergraduate mathematics courses. The results raise questions about the claim that NAPLAN Numeracy tests are effective in assessing knowledge connectedness in mathematical thinking.
