Challenging Teacher Perceptions: Those Children will Struggle No Matter What You Do to Them
Glenda Anthony, Roberta Hunter & Jodie HunterTeachers’ perceptions of students’ capabilities are particularly important in efforts to support instructional reforms. In this presentation, we explore the efforts of one teacher to resolve conflicts and tensions as she engaged with new practices associated with ambitious mathematics teaching. We look in particular at the influence of her diagnostic framing of students’ mathematical capabilities and her beliefs about knowledge acquisition on her introduction of collaborative mixed-ability group work.
