Abstract
In this paper an investigation is reported on whether the trend of sex differences in mathematics
achievement of students at the lower secondary school level changed over time by bringing the
mathematics achievement of the students to a common scale, which is independent of both the samples
of students tested and the samples of items employed. The scale is used to examine the differences in
mathematics achievement between the sexes in Australia over a 30 year period. Conclusions are
drawn about such differences in mathematics achievement over time in Australia.
