Abstract
In the early 80s, Mayberry (1981) developed a diagnostic instrument to be used to assess the van Hiele levels of pre-service teachers. The test was designed to be carried out in an interview situation. The Mayberry study has been replicated under Australian conditions in a written fOlIDat, testing sixty fIrst year primary-teacher trainees. This paper presents the results of the study, comparing them with the results of the Mayberry students, and relating them to their geometric backgrounds. Responses, in general, show that many of the students who had completed a recognised senior secondary geometry course could not display better than Level 2 understanding
