Abstract
Teaching through problem solving (TTPS) is an instructional approach that introduces new concepts by giving students opportunities to solve carefully crafted mathematics problems. However, many teachers struggle to design and implement TTPS lessons, especially when working with low-progress or emerging learners. In this paper, we compare how a teacher designed and implemented tasks to teach through problem solving for a Grade 3 class of 15 emerging learners, drawing data from two lessons to examine what he noticed about the task affordances.
