Abstract
Papers presented at MERGA conferences in recent years have provided little stimulus
for debate on methodological issues relating to research in mathematics education. It
seems appropriate that not only should results of research be presented but
opportunity for discussion of the processes of research and related issues should be
promoted. At the 1993 Brisbane conference of MERGA two papers were presented
(Mousley, Sullivan, & Waywood, 1993; Forgasz, Landvogt, & Leder, 1993) that had
research methodology as their focus. This focus lay within the qualitative paradigm.
This paper continues this theme by considering a strategy for building a conceptual
framework for a set of qualitative data and then outlining a procedure for "looking
inside" the associations between variables.
