Abstract
Many students have difficulty with the language used in both the learning and assessment of
mathematics. This paper investigates the use of English in the assessment of senior secondary
mathematics in New South Wales. Using input from students, along with a linguistic
perspective, it analyses a question from a recent NSW Higher School Certificate examination
and suggests how the language of the assessment might be changed in order to make the
mathematics in it more accessible to the students.
