Abstract
The method of Teaching for Abstraction was applied in Grades 2 and 4 to individual
teaching interviews focussing on the angle concept. Responses of 3 students who
successfully matched different physical angle situations are compared to responses of 3 that
did not. The teaching method was generally supported, but it appears that more emphasis
needs to be given to the examination of within-situation and within-context similarities
before matching across contexts, and hence abstraction of the angle concept, can proceed.
