Abstract
As part of a study focusing on mature age students in tertiary mathematics
courses, a survey was administered to a large number of fIrst year
mathematics students. Data on personal background, self-perceptions as
learners of mathematics and perceptions of the tertiary learning environment
were gathered. Responses from school leavers and mature age students were
compared. Differences were found on several background factors and some
students! attitudes and beliefs. Generally, the mature age students were more
satisfIed with the tertiary learning environment.
