Abstract
Computers have provided many opportunities for new approaches to mathematics in the classroom.
This project focusses on the use of a spreadsheet as an algebraic environment in which algebra can
be introduced to students at year 7 level. Materials for this have been written and used with a group
of mathematically weak year 7 students who had no previous experience of spreadsheets. An
assessment task given the students following the use of the spreadsheets required students to explain
some of their solutions. The results of this give some ideas of students learning. The project is in
early stages and further suggestions for monitoring students algebraic development in a classroom
situation would be appreciated.
