Save the Date! MERGA Panel Discussion – Responding to the Narrative
Ever wish you could better articulate a response to reports like the recent Grattan Institute report in the media? The Special Working Group (SWG) on Effective Pedagogies is hosting a MERGA Panel 12:00 – 1:00 pm (AEST) on Tuesday 13 May for MERGA members.
Three of our panellists are Prof Merrilyn Goos, Prof Tom Lowrie and Prof Catherine Attard, who will speak from their research and/or experience of how to respond to reports on what is considered ‘evidence-based’ or ‘effective pedagogy’. Details to come. Save the date!
MTED Special Issue 2026 – Reminder Proposals Due TODAY
A reminder to all members regarding the call for proposals, for the MTED Special Issue titled Mathematics Teacher Educators: Theories, Methodologies and Teaching Practices. The production of the issue is overseen by the international guest editorial team composed of Signe E. Kastberg (Purdue University, USA), Margaret Marshman (University of Sunshine Coast, Australia), and Cristina Ochoviet (Consejo de Formación en Educación, Uruguay).
Thank you for helping to circulate the call to relevant colleagues outside of the MERGA community.
MERGA Career Research Medal
The MERGA Career Research Medal (MCRM) is awarded to a long-term and active member who has made a sustained and distinguished contribution to research in mathematics education in Australasia and internationally.
Nominations are open and accepted at any time throughout the year, and we are hoping to announce this year’s recipient at our mid year conference. For further information and nomination form details please see our MERGA Career Research Medal page.
Conference News – MERGA 47
Latest Conference News
Submissions for MERGA 47, 2025 in Canberra closed on 23rd March, with an encouraging number of submissions including:
- 60 Research Papers
- 34 Short Communications
- 12 Roundtables
- 1 Symposium
We will have an exciting and busy conference program.
We thank our usual wonderfully supportive community members who have volunteered over the next few weeks to review all research papers, and our tireless Conference Proceedings Editorial team who will be checking all the other submissions.
Authors should anticipate getting feedback for full papers in early May, the editorial team will communicate with others as they work through the submissions.
Finalising MERGA 47 Publications
As you wait for the review feedback, it may be a good time to check on two issues related to your papers’ final publication:
- Each submission requires a Publication Agreement signed by all authors. You will be asked to submit this with your final version of the paper, but collecting all the author signatures may take time in large co-author teams.
- Figures in your paper must be clear (good contrast and resolution). All text in them, including student handwriting, should be at least 10pt (Times New Roman) size. Resizing an image to comply with this requirement may mean that your paper will flow over 8 pages and will not be eligible for publication in the Proceedings.
By attending to these issues now, you will support the timely Proceedings publication!
Pre-Conference Workshop
We are excited to announce a pre-conference workshop on Building a Program of Research, to be delivered by Professor Janette Bobis and Professor Merrilyn Goos. The workshop will be hosted at the Australian Academy of Science, the venue for the opening day of this year’s MERGA Conference. The cost of this event is $100 for members and $150 for non-members. Registrations will be opening soon!
Canberra Accommodation Options
Don’t forget to book your accommodation for this year’s conference. We have provided a range of incredible hotel options on our Venue page, with wonderful discounts for MERGA attendees to suit all preferences and budgets.
We have also included information on how to get around, as well as our two iconic MERGA 47 venues – the Australian Academy of Science’s Shine Dome, and the University of Canberra. We also have information on the MERGA conference dinner to be held at the National Museum of Australia.

Featured Publication
Beth Southwell Practical Implications Award
In 2015, MERGA was held in sunny Queensland at the University of the Sunshine Coast. In the annual conference proceedings, you can find Professor Jodie Hunter’s paper Teacher Actions to Facilitate Early Algebraic Reasoning, which won the Beth Southwell Practical Implications Award for that year. The study emphasises that integrating algebra requires a broad perspective encompassing content, classroom culture, and mathematical practices.

This year’s peer-reviews and self-nominations are currently under review and will be announced at the MERGA 47 conference. For full information on judging criteria and past winners see our Beth Southwell Practical Implications Award page.

Did You Know?
Cognition Strand at MERGA 47
Did you know that this year at MERGA47, there will be a strand dedicated to cognition? The cognitive stream of the conference will take place on Monday 7 July, 2025. The day will start with a Keynote by cognitive and developmental scientist, Professor Bethany Rittle-Johnson, and conclude with a workshop in partnership with the Mathematical Cognition and Learning Society (MCLS). We hope to include cognitive research papers by the MERGA community in the cognitive stream to connect the day.
Last October, MCLS held an online seminar with Australasian researchers (attended by several MERGA members). The seminar featured MCLS Founding Chair Prof Daniel Berch, and a panel hosted by Assoc Prof Ilyse Resnick and moderated by Prof Tom Lowry.
