Abstract
This paper reports on an investigation, commissioned by the Disadvantaged Schools Program
(DSP) of the NSW Department of Education and Training, to identify the best ways to provide
support for mathematics teachers in DSP secondary schools, so that they can assist their
students to meet the literacy demands of mathematics. Case studies in four markedly different
secondary schools were carried out by the authors. Through these, the role of literacy in
mathematics learning, teaching and assessment, as perceived by the mathematics teachers and
students, has been considered.
