Abstract
Starting with apparently unrelated ideas and making connections between
them by looking for similarities and differences is one way of gaining
insights. In this paper some ideas that are compared are:
mathematicalproblem solving,
professiohal development,
research, and
assessment.
The cycles that can be used to summarise these processes are compared,
some of the steps of the cycles that are neglected are discussed, and examples
of insights that affect assessment are considered as examples of those that
might be gained by comparing the processes.
