Pamela PergerThe New Zealand Teachers Council identifies factors important for teacher registration. These factors must also be considered the foundation criteria for effective teachers of mathematics. What is it that makes an effective mathematics teacher? This article presents a picture of the ideal mathematics teacher as described by a group of Year 7 and 8 Pasifika students (11-12 year olds). The criteria identified by these students fell into two categories. One category addressing factors that were associated with personal qualities of the teacher and the second category that related to the learning environment the students saw as most supportive to their mathematical learning.
