Abstract
Current debates about numeracy in the UK focus on the availability of
calculators but although standards of numeracy are poor, they have not
changed significantly since pre-calculator days. It is the way numeracy
is taught which is the problem, with or without calculators. Effective
use of calculators should be associated with the concurrent
development of students' number sense and mental methods.
Calculators can enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics if
used as a focus for discussion and reflection on learning.
